The genetic makeup differentiates individuals with a unique blend of traits. We inherit many features and characteristics from our parents and grandparents. Apart from hair colour, the shape of lips, height, etc. genes are also responsible for genetic diseases like colour blindness, diabetes, cardiac diseases, blood pressure and more. Hypotrichosis simplex is one such rare hereditary hair loss disorder affecting both men and women equally.
What is Hypotrichosis Simplex?
Those affected by hereditary hypotrichosis simplex have normal hair at birth but as the age progresses into the childhood stage. The child starts to lose hair and the condition continues to worsen throughout life. People experience hair loss in the form of diffused hair thinning at the crown. Other symptoms often accompanied with hypotrichosis simplex include complete baldness or alopecia areata and sparse scalp hair, body hair and facial hair. Hereditary hypotrichosis simplex can be of two types:
- Scalp Limited Hypotrichosis Simplex: People suffering from scalp limited hypotrichosis simplex suffer from diffused hair loss during early childhood (between 5 to 12 years of age) with hair gradually leading to complete baldness of the scalp in their 30’s. Only sparse and fine hair are present on the scalp in the mid-twenties. The hair, other than the scalp hair, does not get affected and continue to grow normally.
- Generalized Hypotrichosis Simplex: The generalized form of hypotrichosis affects the scalp, facial and body hair and hence, leads to scarce and thin eyebrows, beard, body and axillary hair. The hair loss begins at a very early stage of life (3 to 6 months of age) and complete baldness occurs during the 20’s.
